Rethinking Church: Renewing Christian Formation
Featuring:
Pastor Mike Erre and Dr. Scot McKnight

We are not in Kansas anymore! Neither is Christian Education:

  • The Gospel is no longer the four spiritual laws but a spiritual journey.
  • Being a Christian is less about membership in a church and more about being a self-stylized Christ follower.
  • The church is no longer under the steeple but in the streets. Evangelism is no longer door to door but about service.
  • The Bible is no longer a single book in many languages but a landscape of media, translations, narrations, simplifications and possibly, contradictions.
  • The next generation seems to be leaving the church for something else.

Whether you agree or disagree with the above opinions, one thing is certain, the church is facing radical changes (challenges) in the way Christianity is understood and lived out. Many church leaders and volunteers are asking: How are the changes in the church and society affecting the way we understand the formation of believers in our context? These folks are making decisions…

As leaders in the field of Christian education, we are called to address these concerns among ourselves and provide leadership for our churches, denominations, and schools. At this year's NAPCE conference we will explore ways to address these concerns. Our presenters will not answer these questions for us but Mike Erre will provide us with a picture of what Rock Harbor is doing and Scot McKnight will provide us with a picture of what's motivating the next generation of believers. We, as professionals in Christian Education will be in conversations at meals, in seminars, walking and talking with each other as we consider the shape of Christian Education for the next generation.

Our Speakers are:

Scot McKnight, Biblical Studies professor at North Park University; author of: The Blue Parakeet (Zondervan 2008); A Community Called Atonement (Abingdon 2007); Praying with the Church (Paraclete 2006); and Embracing Grace: A gospel for all of us (Paraclete, 2005). Follow Scot at http://blog.beliefnet.com/jesuscreed/bio-scot-mcknight.html

Mike Erre, teaching pastor at Rock Harbor Community Church, Costa Mesa, CA; author of Death By Church: Rescuing Jesus from His Followers (Harvest House 2009). Follow Mike at http://www.conversantlife.com/blogs/mike+erre

Join us for great conversations with new friends and enjoy catching up with long time colleagues. We will be in Louisville again this year so, if you were with us last year, you know some of the opportunities that surround the beautiful, historic Brown Hotel.

Introducing Our NAPCE Research Mall!

New this year will be a Research Mall where you will have the opportunity to casually interact with people and their projects in a mall type setting. We are looking forward to this more informal opportunity to converse around interesting ideas. Please let Jim Dekker or Jonathan Kim know if you are interested in the Research Mall opportunity (jdekker@northpark.edu or Jonathan.Kim@Biola.edu).

Exhibitors

Each year we invite publishers of Christian education materials to participate with us in the conference.  Several options for involvement are available. These are listed on the Exhibitor's Contract Form. This is an outstanding way for publishers to get the word out about their resources and it helps us as professors keep up-to-date on what is available.
